Since its formation in the late eighties, Ocho Bolas has been an emblem of the punk scene in Valparaiso, with intermittent work but fierce identification with its surroundings. His discography shows angry, agitated and critical songs, but always attached to the place where they are born. As they sing in “Voy pa’l Baron”: “This is the rock and roll world / There is little money but a lot of fun / I don’t take the subway but I go by elevator”.
The punk scene still supposed resistance to a fierce dictatorship when in 1988 Ocho Bolas performed their first concert. They chose the Mauri Theater in Valparaiso to show for the first time their themes of explicit criticism and fiery electrical distortion («incarnation of all anger and resistance to colonial, corporate, commercial and state oppression», in their words). The following year, the group already had a self-produced cassette of eight own songs (» Al servicio ») and invitations to punk acts in Santiago (they were part of the Third Punk Biennial of 1989, at the Garage de Matucana). In 1991 the band managed to edit a first EP on vinyl and with a German label (Hard work, released by the DIM label).
