Smex was founded in 1999 in Istra (Moscow region) by two brothers: Maxim (Gruzin) and Sergey (Chup). Their style of Smex is called «California punk rock», jokingly hinting at their hometown, as well as their idols from sunny California — NOFX and RANCID.
For a long time the guys could not find a suitable drummer. Suitable, not only for musical qualities and criteria, but also, and most importantly for his attitude to the common cause. Recently, a new drummer Andrey (Curve) joins the group and becomes a full-fledged member of the group. The history holds back about all the other previous musicians who occupied his place.
For us, as for many others, punk rock began with the Sex pistols, which quickly grew into the Ramones. Ramones listened for a long time (maybe a year or two), until we heard, at that time a very outlandish form of punk for us! It was at first — NOFX! And then all of this outgoing ie. No Wanted, Lagwagon, Voodoo Glow Skulls, MxPx, Slick Shoes, Mad Caddies, Face to Face, Good Riddance, Vandals, and not so popular music like Strife, Earth Crisis, Trip Face etc. and put it in such a way that it will not let go until today.
In May 2001, Smex goes with the album Zhivyak to a mini-tour of the Crimea and gives concerts in Simferopol, Sevastopol and Yevpatoria. Upon arrival in Moscow, the album is presented in the club «Tochka»!
During 2001-2003. Smex constantly tours the cities of Russia. One of the latest releases is: Split single (a collection of three groups), which along with the songs of the Parasites groups (N.Novgorod) and Kurki (SPb) included three new Smex songs, including McDonalds. At the end of 2004, the songs “Atypical Pneumonia” and “Homeless” appeared on the collection “Higher School of Punk”. At about the same time on the second part of the collection “Pancomania” the song “No brain, swing your muscles” comes out. In August 2005, Smex takes part in the annual festival «Nashestvie».
Starting from the end of the autumn of the same year, the musicians collect material and in April release their own punk compilation with the self-titled “SMEHOPANKORAMA”, which includes tracks from the brightest and most unusual bands that make up the current punk scene in Russia.
The main idea of this release is: The formation of the spirit of UNITY on our punk scene. In the fall of 2004, Smex will begin recording a new album, and in October 2005, a new, long-awaited Do Not Piss album will be released. The record becomes the sales leader in many music counters. After two big presentations in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the band goes on a big tour in support of the new album. Musicians travel with concerts literally throughout Russia, as well as in Ukraine and Belarus. The total number of shows played is 24 performances.
Smex continues to tour the country and neighboring countries, while simultaneously recording three completely new songs that are included in the triple split single “Punk Brotherhood” and are the beginning of the recording of a new album. And by the spring of 2008, the third numbered album “Alkorider” is ready for release.
