Reel Big Fish is a California ska punk band formed in 1991. The name means «pull out the big fish». As one of the founders put it, «we started it in high school» and didn’t expect much success. Success came along with the choice of direction. Reel Big Fish played covers, but vocalist Ben Guzman preferred a ska twist, which helped create his music. It was a good time — on the third wave of ska, many young bands working in this genre entered the mainstream. Playing in clubs, the band released the first album Everything Sucks in 1995, which attracted the attention of Mojo Records, and the next album was being prepared in collaboration with this studio. The place of Ben Guzman, who left the band, was taken by guitarist Aaron Barrett, and four newcomers appeared in the line-up — the brass section necessary for the ska style.
In 1996, the golden album Turn The Radio Off was released. The track Sell Out was played on popular channels and radio stations, Reel Big Fish became famous, performing throughout the country. With the decline in interest in ska music, the group’s popularity also fell, but it retained a devoted fan base. Although the line-up has changed, some have stayed with the band for many years, and Aaron Barrett has been with the band since its inception. In the future, Reel Big Fish released several more albums, returning to the charts and delighting loyal fans of the style. In 2016, anniversary concerts were successfully held in the USA in honor of the 25th anniversary of the band with the slogan «Fishing since 1991!»
In the fall of 2018, the band will present a new album as part of a major US tour, the schedule of which is posted on the official website. The first performance will take place on October 4 in Santa Cruz, California, and the final performance will take place on November 29 in Athens, Georgia.
